Spotify Wrapped is cool this year

Hey friends!

Today we’re going to talk about what you need to do for Spotify Wrapped this year, and why you should do it.

This newsletter is also available as a podcast, listen on your favorite podcast platform here.

The deadline to get ready for Spotify Wrapped 2023 is November 15th, so make sure you get this stuff done by them!

Every year Spotify creates something called a ‘Spotify Wrapped’ that they send to every listen on Spotify around December 1st. Think of it like a music recap for their listening habits throughout the year. Artists also get one too.

The stats in Spotify Wrapped are from January to October 31st, they don’t include November and December.

If you as an artist appear in a listeners Spotify Wrapped, Spotify will let you send these fans a video, show them your merch, give them a coupon code and show them your tour dates.

It’s a nice (and free) opportunity to get your stuff in front of your most engaged listeners.

Upload a video

Just like 2022, Spotify Wrapped 2023 has a video component to it.

The way this works is you record a 30 second video and upload it on Spotify. Any fan who made you one of their top artists for the year will receive this message.

If you’ve been looking for a direct way to thank your top Spotify fans for their support, this is a great way. You can’t include links, calls to action, music or text. It’s specifically for thanking your fans on camera.

Remember, these are people who have listened to you more than most other artists on Spotify. Your music was a significant chunk of their lives in 2023 - that means something.

Promote your merch

You can however directly promote your merch to these top fans!

If you have a Shopify store linked to your Spotify for Artists account:

  • You can create a discount code for your top fans

  • Spotify will recommend up to 5 of your merch items

I couldn’t get the discount code to work. Spotify says just go to Merch, Special Offers and then click the ‘Create Discount’ button. However I don’t have a Special Offers area.

Maybe it will show up later?

Promote shows

Have any tour / show dates coming up? You can list your shows on your Spotify and they’ll include that to your top listeners on Spotify Wrapped.

As long as your show is through these ticketing partner sites, you can list it:

New Content

In this video I talk about how each music distributor actually has a different pay rate on Spotify, Apple Music and other DSPs.

In this video I cover a new fan community tool for musicians called Rivet. It blends a link-in-bio with an email list, membership platform and more.
