Apple Music now shows radio spins?!
Happy Monday!
Today we’re going to talk about Apple Music’s new radio spins analytics.
This isn’t radio on Apple Music, this is showing stats for real radio stations. I saw it when I went to log into Apple Music for artists over the weekend and saw this:
When checking my currently dormant solo project (focusing on my bands after a hiatus), I was surprised to see i’ve had 25 radio spins this year.
Upon further inspection I was able to see exactly which songs were played on the radio.
But, even better, if you click on a specific song you can see the exact radio stations playing that song on air. In the case of my song Animal it was played on 88.5 WMNF Tampa (no idea how I got this or what this station is lol).
Now lets look at the radio stats for a much bigger artist. I can’t say the name, but these are the radio spins for a song by a pop artist from the USA with over 1 million followers on socials.
I’m just gonna be brutally honest… I know nothing about getting on the radio. My expertise lies in internet / digital marketing. However, one thing i’m very excited to see is how digital marketing and DSP strategies will influence radio coverage even if we aren’t doing a radio campaign.
For example, does dropping a new song and running ads on it influence radio spins? What about 3rd party playlisting? SubmitHub? Etc… With these stats we can somewhat predictably correlate marketing efforts to organic radio spins which is amazing.
Radio historically is a bit of a black box. You don’t always know every time your music is played. On top of that, you don’t (and still won’t) know how many people actually heard the song when it was played. But this is one step in the right direction.
